African Braids are an old custom within Africa, originating from 3500 BC in Egypt.
It was a means of expression for females, and males to say what tribe they were from, their relationship status, and their hierarchy in society. In addition, it was a bonding opportunity between the females. Many traditions were passed down as conversations occurred while hair braiding was taking place. For example, the elders would do the younger children’s hair while the older children watched to learn the various designs and listen to wisdom.
